October 3, 2003SunNetwork BerlinCertain Solaris technologies -- including Solaris x86 -- will be showcased at SunNetwork Berlin. It is not yet known who from Solaris Marketing and/or Solaris engineering will be working at SunNetwork. Mariusz might be able to attend. HCL/HCTS/DriversDennis recapped his findings regarding lack of parity when it comes to Sun supporting PCI cards on V60x and V65x equally with SPARC servers. Chris said it's a known issue and it's being worked. LicensingNo news. LISA BOFBOF will be Wednesday Oct 29th from 9-11 PM. A description is posted on the USENIX/LISA web site. Eric and Alan will present. Phil will also present if Eric can get him a conference pass. Topics TBD. 50-100 Solaris x86 8/03 promo media kits will be handed out at the BOF. Sascha suggested syncing up with Samba developer, Gerald Carter at LISA because keeping Samba 3 multi-platform is a major interest of his. (Sascha talked with him and gave him a CD kit at the USENIX Conference in June.) WorkgroupsStill being looked at. Alan mentioned that he's working on a proposal to bring community folks to Sun for a briefing and to form the basis of the workgroups which Sun will use to engage the community in the future. Alan hopes to have the proposal in by next month and we'll proceed when we know how management accepts it. Community Bug ReportingEric presented the following 23 "buckets" that are being proposed for filing community-sourced bugs:
Using these buckets, a few "bugs-by-mail" submissions will be made internally by Alan and Eric to evaluate/test the process. Subsequently, certain community members will be "authorized" to submit bugs this way on behalf of the community at large. There was a discussion about core dumps and how bugs would get escalated once submitted. Solaris ExpressEric encouraged everyone to use and to spread the word about Solaris Express because, coupled with the ubiquity of x86 platforms platforms, it's a great way to raise awareness and encourage hands-on use of up-and-coming Solaris technologies that previously would only be made available to Sun employees. A question was asked about whether the Solaris 9 x86 download would be made free since Solaris Express x86 could be acquired for free. Chris said he'd look into it. Dennis asked whether he could use his Solaris Express contract to extend access to Solaris Express to the Blastwave.org developers. Chris said (what did you say here?) Rich asked if there would be a regular Solaris "Next" beta. Chris said he believed there would be. |
